Document assessment

Assessment and audit against a plain English standard

Do you know how well your writing measures up against internationally accepted principles of plain English?

We can give you expert feedback on one document, or do a full audit of many documents from across your organisation.

You’ll benefit by:

  • benchmarking your writing against best practice principles of communication
  • finding out what you need to do to improve one or more documents or webpages
  • gaining recognition for a well-written document by earning New Zealand’s document quality mark, the WriteMark Plain English Standard.

Common objectives of a document audit

  • Get insight into the general standard of writing across your organisation, measured against internationally accepted plain English principles.
  • Identify possible differences in writing quality across various parts of your organisation.
  • Assess how well your written communication reflects your organisation’s vision, values, and desired image.
  • Assess how well your written communication serves your objectives.

Different assessment tools for different needs

Step 1: Assessment. We typically use the comprehensive WriteMark assessment process as our audit tool. However, depending on your needs and budget, we can use the Write Short Plain English Standard, or your own in-house standard.

Step 2: User testing. We can also interview a sample of document readers, or combine the audit with detailed user testing of selected documents.

Step 3: Report. You’ll get an individual report on each document along with a summary report.

To discuss your document assessment needs, email consulting@write.co.nz or phone 04 384 6447.
