Writing tip 28: Write global English
Make your writing plain to all your readers. Not all of them will have English as their first language, so write ‘global English’.
Your writing will be easier for all readers to understand if you use clear, concise language and avoid:
- slang, clichés, and humour
- phrasal verbs
- negatives.

Avoid phrasal verbs
Phrasal verbs consist of multiple words, such as break down, put up with, run out, and wrap up. These verbs are very common but can be extremely difficult to translate.

Avoid negatives
Positive questions and statements are easier to understand than negative ones.
