Writing tip 7: The 'have' / 'has' trap

It's easy to get this wrong when referring to groups.

'The team have won the cup!' This is incorrect. There’s only one team, even though the team’s got several members. So it should be: the team has won the cup.

Be careful when you are talking about your company, organisation or committee. You need to use the singular 'has'. But if you talk about your committee members, use the plural 'have'.
