Writing tip 9: It's an apostrophe!

Only use an apostrophe in 'it's' to stand for missing letters. If you mean 'it is' or 'it has', use the apostrophe. If not, leave it out.

Examples
It's been raining.
It's really quite simple.


The word 'its' (without an apostrophe) shows possession.

Examples
Its colour is blue.
The business had lost its clients.
